Bellringing:

St Hilda’s Church has a ring of eight bells that were cast by the Whitechapel Bellfoundry, London in 1922 with a tenor weight of 9cwt. They are the only ringable bells in a church in South Tyneside.

This ring was transferred from the church of St Aidan’s Blackhill, Consett in 1999 and replaced the previous eight (9cwt) that were installed here in 1885 by Mears & Stainbank, London.

The local band takes an active roll in The Durham & Newcastle Diocesan Association of Church Bellringers. It was with the support of the Association that the bells were able to be restored in 1999.

We have a small band of regular ringers who ring for services each Sunday and for other special services as required.

The bellringing practice is on the first Thursday of each month from 7.30pm till 9pm.
